While some children rapidly progress through precocious puberty, some follow a waxing and waning course, and these more mild cases may not require treatment and may achieve acceptable final height. Nonetheless, the psychological stress of early sexual development and menarche in girls may mediate the decision towards therapy. It should be noted that fertility may be achieved early in boys and girls with central precocious puberty, and the possibility of sexual abuse is heightened. Furthermore, there is an increased risk of the development of carcinoma of the breast in girls in adulthood after central precocious puberty.
